What will Łasztownia look like in a few years from now? The future of this unique place was discussed in the Old Abattoir at a meeting entitled “The Szczecin of the Future – the Future of Szczecin_ŁASZTOWNIA”. The main item on the agenda consisted of a presentation of workshop designs regarding the development of parts of Łasztownia. The works were created within the scope of the Westival – the art of architecture last year.

The meeting with residents of the city was participated in, among others, by Mayor of Szczecin Piotr Krzystek, Deputy Mayor Piotr Mync and Wiesława Rabińska, Director of the Urban Planning and Construction Administration Department of Szczecin Municipal Office. The meeting was chaired by City Architect Jarosław Bondar. The designs presented in the Old Abattoir were a result of “The Szczecin of the Future – the Future of Szczecin_ŁASZTOWNIA” workshop organised for architects and students of architecture, which were held as a part of the Westival last year. The participants in the workshop were divided into three groups. Each of the groups consisted of three architects and three students. The workshop was about the sector covered by Bulwar Gdyński, Trasa Zamkowa and Energetyków Streets.

“The method of developing Łasztownia is definitely a big challenge. At the same time, it is an opportunity to create a new space, rediscover Łasztownia and restore its old glamour. This place can create the atmosphere of the city. Łasztownia can also become such a unique and great enterprise as the new Philharmonic Hall. We want to approach this project in a professional way, inviting the co-operation of specialists from all over the world. The works created at the Westival workshops will certainly set the direction for the whole project” said Mayor of Szczecin Piotr Krzystek during the meeting.

In their designs for the development of Łasztownia, each of the groups stressed the necessity to limit vehicle traffic on the Oder River and to move it to the back of the isle. At the same time, it was suggested to use the area as a space for culture, whether in the form of a workshops area or as a place for arts. The participants in the workshops also stressed that it was a good idea to use the space under Trasa Zamkowa. Examples of using such spaces in the world were pointed to as the possible sources of inspiration. Each of the groups also stressed the need to create a pedestrian and bicycle catwalk spanning the two banks of the Oder River and allowing easier access to Łasztownia. The creation of a waterfront that will fully reflect the climate of the place is also essential.

A discussion was held by the meeting participants after the presentation. During the exchange of opinions it was highlighted that preserving the maritime nature and the unique character of the isle is necessary. Also the importance of restoring the old glamour which the place enjoyed before World War II was also indicated. Łasztownia has numerous assets, which used in a proper way, can make this place unique and recognised worldwide.

“What we are going to create in Łasztownia will serve the residents for many years, and that is why it is worth preparing the measures properly. I owe my gratitude to those who have devoted their time to preparing the designs. They will surely become an inspiration for preparing an international contest for the redevelopment of Łasztownia” added Deputy Mayor of Szczecin Piotr Mync in conclusion.

The meeting was part of the “Łasztownia. The New Heart of the City” project. The scope of the project is also designed to include community consulting with the residents, stakeholders and professional circles.
